Over 200 sign up for Skye Cycle

Skye

This Saturday the 29th over 200 cyclists will be heading to Portree for the start and finish of the Skye Mor and Beag sportives.

The Skye Mor, 90 miles, and Skye Beag, 45 miles, will take cyclists around the wild and beautiful Trotternish Peninsula right at the Northern tip of Skye.

The start and finish will be in Portree, and the local community are, as always, providing extremely enthusiastic support, ensuring a warm welcome for all participants. The course leaves Portree and heads north up the east coast of the island, passing The Old Man of Storr, a 160ft basalt pillar left standing alone after the volcano which produced it has long since weathered away. The road continues around the remote Trotternish peninsula with the wild Atlantic ocean on your right to Uig – gateway to the Western Isles – Riders really will feel that they are on the edge of the world. As the route swings South the Cuillin Mountains are directly ahead. Mountains don’t get any more dramatic than this! At the Sligachan Hotel you rejoin a smooth newly surfaced road to sweep north back to the finish at Portree. Riders will all receive a bottle and mug which have been provided by Energy Consultancy Atmos.

There is also a free cycle ride for juniors and all are welcome to come along and ride. Registration for the junior event will be in the community centre at 8.30am and the ride will be 4 miles long, starting at 9.30am.

The event this year is also being filmed for the BBC2 Adventure show. Dougie Vipond will be out on the route following the riders around Skye with the team from Triple Echo productions. It will be broadcast later on in the year.

Charity Riders ride to the Skye Spotive 2010

Lucky2bhere

During 27th, 28th and 29th May 2010, a small team of nine, including Douglas MacDougall from Portree and Jon Millar, will attempt to cycle from Aberdeen (East coast) to Portree, Isle of Skye (West coast).

The route will include a gut wrenching climb over the Lecht and covers a total of around 230 Miles.  We are not hardened cyclists so this is a major challenge and we need your support!    So why are we doing it ?

Our aim is to raise £2000 for a Skye based charity called Luck2bhere.  This charity aims to provide publicly accessible Defibrillators in villages on Skye where access to life saving medical care is limited.   If we raise £2000 Lucky2bhere will be able to purchase one Defibrillator and train ten people in its use and will most likely site the machine in Uig (which is on your Sportive route).

If we raise £4000....then we get two!   We are looking forward to arriving in Portree on 29 May, safe and sound as I'm sure you are too...but as you go, spare a thought for luck2bhere who have already located a number of Defibulators on Skye, including ones at Dunvegan and Portree (which again are on your route) and in their small way provide reassurance to us all should we ever need their use.

Enjoy the day and please dig deep for us!

 Many thanks   Jon and Douglas

Skye Sportive on the BBC! The Skye Mor and Beag Sportives 29th May www.handsonevents.co.uk are being filmed for the Adventure Show on BBC Scotland. Starting and finishing in Portree on the Isle of Skye the route follows the peninsula between the cliffs of the Quaraing and the Atlantic Ocean. Riders really do feel that they are on the edge of the world. As the route swings South the Cuillin Mountains are directly ahead. Mountains don’t get any more dramatic than this. This event should make for some excellent TV. Two distances; 100 or 50 miles, so something for everyone.
