Competitor details for the weekend of the Highlander 2016 – 4th & 5th June
Well it is finally almost upon us, the 10th and final EVER Highlander Mountain Marathon. It is bitter sweet putting together the final preparations for this year’s event. We are so so excited for what promises to be THE biggest and best Highlander ever. However, all good things must come to an end and there is more than a twinge of sadness with the realisation that this is the last one.

Please, please, please read all of the information below so you know where you need to be and when. All the information you need for the weekend should be contained in this email or on the Hands On Events website – www.handsonevents.co.uk
The Highlander 2016 will take place in the amazing and awe-inspiring hills around Glen Cannich. Registration and weekend parking will be in and around the village of Cannich, around 27 miles West of Inverness along the A862 & A831.
Cannich is 27 miles South-West of Inverness and around 17 miles from the town of Beauly along the A831. It is a small village but once you enter Cannich the event will be signposted and you will be directed by parking marshals to either weekend parking or the Village Hall for registration. Cannich to Inverness by road and will take around 35-45 minutes to travel to by car. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND WHEN BOOKING ACCOMMODATION OR DECIDING WHEN TO REGISTER AS THERE WILL BE EARLY STARTS ON THE SATURDAY MORNING!
From the Central Belt it is likely to be around 4 hours. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE NEW AVERAGE SPEED CAMERAS ON THE A9 BETWEEN GLASGOW AND JUST SOUTH OF INVERNESS NOW.
For directions to Cannich by car we would recommend http://www.rac.co.uk/route-planner/ For travel from Inverness you can take either the A82 then A831 or the A862 then the A831.
As you approach Cannich please slow down and PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR THE MARSHALS AS YOU TRAVEL ALONG THE A831 THROUGH THE VILLAGE AND FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS! Please help us ensure we don’t do anything to abuse the generosity of the local community by following the parking marshals’ instructions at all times.
The event registration will take place in the Village Hall – IV4 7LY (http://cannich-hall.co.uk/) and there is ample parking there for competitors.
We can’t help directly with arranging car sharing to the event but please feel free to use the Highlander Mountain Marathon or Hands On Events Facebook pages as a forum to try and do so. This has worked well in the past for competitors. Parking
The golden rule is to follow the directions of parking marshalls at all times. The vast majority of parking will take place at the Village Hall. If we have to use overspill parking away from the registration there will be shuttle buses on hand to take you to registration. There is an excellent and fairly large camp site in Cannich for those wishing to camp on Friday evening. Cannich Woodland Campsite is very pleased to welcome competitors in the HHM. There is no need to book for camping as it is a natural sort of site – we will fit you in. The special price for competitors is £7 per night. If you only want a shower on the Sunday after the event and are not camping Sunday night, that is OK for a charge of £3. There will be someone at reception for you. Please see http://www.highlandcamping.co.uk/ for more details There are lots of Hotels, Guest Houses and Bed and Breakfasts in the Inverness area. There are also a small number of accommodation options in both Beauly and Drumnadrochit. It is peak tourist season in the Highlands though so accommodation providers will be very busy. Please bear in mind the travel time to Cannich when arranging accommodation as there will be early starts on the Saturday morning. Cannich itself has very little in the way of accommodation for competitors. There will be the use of the portable toilets at the registration centre.
There will be little choice for places to eat in Cannich on the Friday evening. However, there will be catering provided by the folks at the excellent “Moveable feast” who are pleased to be serving at Cannich Village Hall a range of tasty and nutritious meals on Friday evening between 17:30 and 21:00 those competitors can purchase. They will also be there on Saturday morning between 06:00 and 09:30. There will also be yummy homebaking, snacks and hot and cold drinks available. If you are going to arrive later than 21:00 on the Friday evening then advice is eat on your way as there likely won’t be anywhere serving food beyond then. If you are planning to eat somewhere we would recommend double checking they are serving food and having a reservation also.
Registration Registration will take place in the Village Hall in Cannich. You will be directed to weekend parking or directly to registration depending on when you register. You will be directed to event parking by parking marshals in and around Cannich village hall. Don’t worry, this will be well signposted and there will be plenty of event marshals on hand to make sure you know exactly where you are going. Marshals will be on site on both the Friday evening and Saturday morning.
AS THIS IS THE BIGGEST ENTRY FIELD WE HAVE EVER HAD WE WOULD ENCOURAGE AS MANY OF YOU AS POSSIBLE TO REGISTER ON FRIDAY NIGHT IF YOU CAN.
Registration is open on Friday 3rd June from 18.00 – 21.00 and Saturday 4th June in the morning from 06:30 – 08:30. FIRST BUSES WILL LEAVE TO TAKE COMPETITORS TO THE START FROM 06:30 ON SATURDAY MORNING. THESE BUSES WILL LEAVE EVERY 15 MINUTES WITH THE LAST BUS IS DUE TO LEAVE NO LATER THAN 10:30.
Start times and the Courses
THERE WILL BE EARLY STARTS ON DAY 1
On Day 1 (4th June) there will be punching starts between 07:00 and 11:00. You will be given a start time at registration either on the Friday evening or the Saturday morning. At the start each competitor will be given a map and a control sheet with descriptions.
There will be hot food provided for each competitor at the finish of Day 1 (Saturday) from 13:00 onwards.
BRING MONEY FOR BEER AT THE CEILIDH ON THE SATURDAY EVENING, ADDITIONAL FOOD AND FOR BREAKFAST ON THE SUNDAY MORNING!
Bacon butties etc for breakfast should be available to purchase around the registration hall in Cannich from 06:30 on Saturday morning. These will be available again in the marquee at the overnight camp on Sunday morning from 06:00.
Day 2 (5th) mass punching starts will be from 07:00-07:30. Chasing starts will take place from 07:30-08:30 and will be announced at the overnight camp/ceilidh at the end of Day 1.
Prize giving will be at the finish point on Sunday (5th) at 14:30.
Please remember that the main roads are out of bounds to competitors during the event
As usual we are using SPORTident timing. You are reminded that BOTH team members must visit ALL controls together, and EACH team member MUST punch ALL controls visited.
In the unlikely eventuality that a control box does not register your punch, there are two possible reasons for this:-
- the control box has suffered battery failure or damage (by excessive moisture or by being dropped – please be careful with them), or
- you are a Super-being on the Score course who has managed to visit more than 30 controls that day. The standard SI-card 8 only holds 30 punches (not counting start and finish) so if you go past 30 it will be full and won’t register. We consider this unlikely as, Super though you all are, 30 controls would point to serious abnormalities and compulsory drug testing on reaching the finish.
In either case, there is a fall-back. On each control box there is a Three Letter Word. If the box doesn’t function, please write down the TLW on the map or other paper and tell us at the finish, and we will credit you with the control.
It’s deer calving time of year, so you may find deer calves lying seemingly unattended on the hill. The mother will in fact be nearby, waiting anxiously for you to move on. Please do so quickly and calmly so as not to cause undue upset. Please DO NOT TOUCH the calf, as if the mother scents that a human has touched the calf, then she is likely to reject it.
Other useful info
There will be trophies for 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each category. PLEASE BRING A DECENT MARKER PEN (i.e. A SHARPIE) TO MARK UP MAPS AND ALSO A 2B PENCIL MAY COME IN HANDY IF IT IS PARTICULARLY WET!
Although the Highlander is taking place later in the year than normal and in the Scottish “summer”, it is the Scottish Highlands in the hills and weather conditions can be extremely variable. Kit can be left securely in the registration hall that will be available for competitors to collect when they finish rather than having to go back to their cars straight away.
